DESCRIPTION: This composite of five scenes shows The Seawanhazka which was destroyed by fire while at sea, the blaze breaking out suddenly and spreading so quickly that the ship could not be saved. As flames took hold, passengers were hurried on deck and boats were lowered amid smoke, falling spars, and burning rigging. Nearby vessels came alongside to assist, and the rescue of those aboard became the sole priority once it was clear the fire was uncontrollable. The event was widely reported at the time, noted both for the speed with which the ship was lost and for the successful evacuation of passengers before the vessel was consumed.
